Will the real Carol Everett
Please Stand up

Ah! Had to scan through here to find this.  I thought someone in here had been looking for info on Carol Everett.  Sorry it's taken me so long to supplement my previous post, but I have been buried, just buried, in paperwork.  Here are some excerpts of information I have on her in my files. My file on Carol Everett, alone, is about an inch thick:

From "Affidavit of Carol N. Everett, State of Texas, County of Dallas", testimony presented before the 1985 Texas Legislature:

Signed: Carol N. Everett,
Subscribed and sworn to by Carol N. Everett on this 12th day of April, 1985. Joy L. Tull, Notary Public In and for the State of Texas.

I have what appears to be a statement or news release, on the letterhead of William W. West, Jr., M.D., outpatient psychiatry, obstetrics and Gynecology, signed and dated 2/24/88, that is two pages, single-spaced, all related to Carol Everett, excerpts as follows:

"As a physician who performs abortions, I was once closely associated professionally with Ms. Carol Everett, the recently announced public affairs director of Greater Dallas Right to Life Committee and Texas Coalition for Life. Although I would prefer to hold an old acquaintance in positive regard, I recall no good reason to dispute her claim that she was involved in the provision of abortion services primarily for reasons no more honorable than simple greed for money.

 PAGE 2

"I do, however, think I have god reason to dispute her current claim of moral "conversion". I seriously doubt that her motives have really changed. Numerous greed-struck religious frauds (and a few secular ones, as well) have in recent years developed sensationalistic, melodramatic, inflammatory, and blatantly fraudulent anti-abortion propaganda into one of their biggest and most dependable money-makers. I would not doubt that Carol Everett is being paid very well by Bill Price and his organizations to say whatever they think is likely to advance their agenda and hustle monetary contributions, with little regard for either truth or plausibility.

"One thing Ms. Everett claims is that callous greed like hers is a common motive among those who are involved in the provision of abortion services. This is flagrantly untrue. She should know better. She also contends that legal abortion, as practiced in the United States today, is prohibitively dangerous. In actual fact, it is probably about as safe as having a wisdom tooth pulled and is certainly much safer than having a baby, its only alternative. She should now this.

"She claims to have "seen the light" and resigned from her clinic position in 1983. Actually, she was fired and was quite bitter and fiercely vengeful about it. It seems likely that she is still seeking revenge by ragefully attacking abortion providers in general, and with outrageous dishonesty.

"She was never even the owner of a clinic as she claims. This fact can be verified by reference to legal documents on file with the Dallas County District Clerk (Cause No. 85-522-L, styled Carol Everett vs. J. Harvey Johnson, et. al.).

". . .Among Ms. Everett's various fraudulent claims is her assertion that abortion surgery is deliberately performed on women who are not actually pregnant in order to get their money. Give me a break! I hope there are not many among us who are cynical and gullible enough to actually believe such garbage!

"Ms. Everett's high level of dishonesty is quite compatible with that of the so-called "Pro-Life Movement". Perhaps she can thus feel more at home on that side of the fence. My question is whether she is lying or deluded, and whether she has truly converted in any real sense. . . .

From an interview in the Ft.Worth Sun-Telegram, 3-3-88, by Terry Goodrich, Carol Everett is quoted as follows:

"My husband and I had made a deal before we got married," she said. "He'd had a bad marriage, and I had, too. I had two children, and we didn't want any more. The agreement was this if I got pregnant, I'd have an abortion."

"I had an abortion, and the bottom fell out. I was running from it. I ran out and had an affair. then I went to my doctor and said, "I'm having trouble.' He gave me some mood elevators, and I started abusing them. That didn't take care of it either, so I started getting drunk."

[My comments here: Now, does this person sound like a bastion of integrity or what?]

"When her boss, who sold medical supplies, opened two abortion clinics -- the North Dallas Women's Clinic and South Lake Women's Clinic in Forth Worth -- she managed them for him. When he refused to give her part ownership, she found a doctor and started her own, with an agreement that she be paid $25 per abortion, she said. They started with 45 abortions per month and in her last month before getting out of the business, "we did over 500 abortions" at the Dallas Medical Ladies' Clinic and Women's Clinic of Mesquite, she said. "I made $13,625 my last month."

[My comment here: Notice the complete difference between the above "story" and Carol's affidavit before the Texas legislature.]

"I suspected some abortions were being performed on women who weren't pregnant, but I couldn't prove it because I was a non-medical person," she said.

[My comments here: Now, contrast this to her outright statement in the movie "Meet the Abortion Providers," Pro-Life Action League, Nov. 1987, where she says that abortions were performed on women who weren't pregnant.]

Also quoted in the same Ft. Worth Sun-Telegram interview is Dr. Harvey Johnson, the doctor Everett said she co-owned the clinics with and he says,

"As far as the ownership, I think you should ask her to produce the papers."

Now, in yet another article, from a newspaper in Midland Texas dated August 26, 1988, showing Carol's picture, with the side caption "Carol Everett who has had an abortion and owned two abortion clinics in Dallas, now campaigns for the repeal of Wade vs. Roe, the supreme Court decision that legalized abortions."
George Wolf, Reporter-Telegram.

Below the picture is an interview by Julie Hillrichs, Staff Writer that begins ". . . . Mrs. Everett owned two abortion clinics in Dallas where more than 35,000 such procedures were conducted from 1977-83."

As you can see, she claims to have been vice-president and part owner of two clinics in her testimony before the Texas committee, which, actually was the basis for the lawsuit referred to in Dr. Westin's statement (Carol apparently was suing to be declared part owner and wasn't).

Now, notice, in her testimony, she claimed to have been involved with abortion-referral services in Dallas and Ft. Worth, and to have been "part-owner" of two clinics in Dallas (which Dr. Westin and legal papers dispute as untrue to begin with).

However, even these simple deceptions have grown and grown over the years, a lot like Pinocchio's nose:

In an article written by Carol Everett, that appeared in the 1991 American Life League  "All About Issues" Magazine, August-September 1991 issue, she writes three full 8-1/2 x 11 pages, three columns per page, two entire columns of which are devoted to describing in the first person (from her experience) how women were tricked into having abortions who weren't pregnant. The story grows:

"Together, they go to the lab. The counselor mixes the urine and the chemicals, point to a chart on the wall which shows the results of both a positive and a negative test. The woman watches the test and if it is positive, the counselor sympathizes with her. . . .If you read many pregnancy tests, you can tell at about a minute into the test if it is going to be positive or negative. If the test looks questionable, the counselor will start selling another step. "This test is not sensitive enough to pick up a very early pregnancy, but we have another test we can do that will tell you positively today. . . .A sonogram shows everything in a woman's abdomen, and a uterus will show up, pregnant or not. The doctor or technician will find a good view of the uterus, lock the screen in place, turn it around to show it to (the patient), and say, "See, there is is, you are pregnant." (The patients) does not routinely read sonograms, so she will take the expert's opinion. . . ."

"I worked seven days a week doing abortions, even on Sunday. . . .In 1983, with two clinics open, I was well on the way to $250,000, with plans to open three more clinics. With five clinics open (the McDonald's of the abortion industry), my income would have been $1,000,000 annually!"

". . . .A television station in our area did an expose' on abortion clinics doing abortions on women who were not pregnant. Six women came in, dressed in blue jeans, wired for sound. We worked so hard on one woman that she had to change her tape! She was so convinced she was pregnant that she used to her own doctor, who ran another test to confirm that she was not pregnant. As this flashed across the television screen for five days, I experienced an incredible peace that surpassed all understanding. My prayer was answered. I was not supposed to be in the abortion business!"

[My comment here. I think, as I said earlier, she "got religion" when she got busted.]

Now, in a national advertisement, with a picture of her across the top, that solicits contributions for the "Abortion is not Family Planning Coalition, c/o NRLC 419 Seventh Street NW #500, Washington, D.C., 20084, the following quote appears with her picture, emblazoned across the top of the ad, in QUOTE marks:

"When I ran several abortion clinics in Texas, I received referrals from a Title 10-funded clinic...I know what "counselling" means: more money for the abortion industry."

[My comment here: Now it's "several clinics." ]

In an interview in the Catholic spirit, September 20, 1991, by Richard Cain, the article begins:

"(In 1973, Carol Everett had an abortion to save her marriage. In an attempt to justify that abortion, she ended up becoming a part-owner of two abortion clinics in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. . . ."
The rest of the article is written by Carol. The interviewer asks her how much she makes now and she replies that she gets $750. a day lecturing fee.

[ My comment: A check of her itinerary also reveals she is quite mobile in providing these 'lectures' recently visiting Bermuda, Hawaii, and Australia]

Now, interestingly enough, in this article, she makes it appear that she actually set up the Channel 4, CBA, July 1983 "expose" of telling women who weren't pregnant that they were pregnant! "In July 1983, Channel 4, the CBS affiliate in Dallas did an expose on abortion clinics doing abortions on women who were not pregnant. They sent reporters in wired for sound, to see if we would sell abortions to non-pregnant women -- and we did! I knew they were coming and I warned the staff. But you cannot control greedy abortionists."

Brochure from San Antonio Right to Life, PO Box 15566, San Antonio, TX 78212, Carol is pictured in the center with 9 infants behind her with the caption "Carol Everett was involved in the abortion industry in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area from 1977 until 1983. As director of four clinics, owner of two. Ms. Everett was responsible for the clinics' daily operation as well as for all employee training programs. She had an abortion soon after it became legal in 1973 and now speaks out on what she saw in the abortion industry."

This brochure says, "Each time I sold an abortion to another woman, I justified my own abortion all over again. . . .When I realized how profitable the "business" was, I wanted more money. Because my employer would not give me an equity interest, I negotiated a more lucrative arrangement with the next clinic. I was paid $25 for each abortion that was done."

[My comment: "Paid" doesn't sound like "owned" to me.]

She also claims that she got out of the industry because :

"Then we had a death. A 32 year old woman hemorrhaged to death as a result of a cervical laceration. I finally realized,we weren't helping women -- we were destroying them."

Now, contrast this to some other interviews, including ones from which I've quoted earlier, in which she says they were having deaths once a month! But now, one death (not getting busted by the TV, which she now claims to have set up), made her "see the light."

The woman is a chronic liar and a fraud. She's just better paid now than before.

Summary

Her claim that she 'owned' abortion clinics was false and was the subject of litigation which can substantiate the falsehood of that claim.

She did not 'quit' but she was fired when it was clearly demonstrated on public television that she was guilty of consumer fraud. under those circumstances any clinic she was associated with would become a liability to the owner. One has to wonder what happened to allay those charges.

She did not see 'many deaths' in her 'clinic career' but was possibly a witness to one.

She was a liar, and fraud, by her own admission, when she was involved in the abortion clinics.  When she left this job she simply traded in one lucrative career for another.  All she had to do was tell the anti-abortionists what lies they wanted to hear.

She has still no need for truth.  In her any 'lie will do' zeal she makes such claims as "We now know that 92 percent of women who have abortions experience post-abortion syndrome. One out of four of those women will have problems with future pregnancies, including sterility. " ( quoted here )

The driving force behind her involvement in the abortion clinic business was exactly the same as the driving force behind her involvement in the anti-abortion industry.  She was driven by monetary greed and the desire for recognition.

The leopard has not changed her spots.  She has just moved back into the jungle and is now surviving with bigger carnivores.
